Tortoise Takeover

DURRELL – SUMMER 2023

In 2023, Jersey charity Durrell shortlisted 50 artists to take part in the Tortoise Takeover, an island-wide public art trail, to raise funds to build a new Tropical Islands house at Jersey Zoo.

My submission was ‘Janvrin’s Tortoise’, a homage to the awe-inspiring landscapes of our island home, highlighting the captivating and integral bond between the land and sea. This design is more than just a tribute to the island’s beauty; it’s also a nod to Jersey’s rich history, enchanting connection with local folklore, and unique marine environment. The piece’s 3D elements create texture and form, adding depth and dimension to bring the landscape to life in a way that is both visually striking and immersive. It also provides a unique perspective of looking down on the familiar scenery of Portelet Bay in miniature form.

The art trail was live for the months of July and August 2023, with the auction in September raising over £700,000. Janvrin’s Tortoise sold for £7,500.
